Google are looking to block disruptive notifications, we explore what they are, and why Google is doing this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you\u2019re browsing it can feel like you\u2019re being bombarded with things other people want you to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only do we have to click on permissions for cookies and tracking, but now a lot of websites ask for our permission to send us notifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while many of these notifications are harmless \u2013 news updates, latest recipes, product releases \u2013 sometimes they can be outright spam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s distracting, it\u2019s making us less productive at work, and it\u2019s just really annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s called \u2018notification spam\u2019 and it\u2019s becoming a problem. In fact, Google says it\u2019s one of the top complaint reports from people using its Chrome browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So now the tech giant has decided to do more about it disruptive notifications.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Back in October 2020, Google first acted on harmful notifications by exposing websites that misled people into giving permission. It created its own prompts to warn people the website may have malicious intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, Google intends to take things a step further if it feels the website is \u2018abusive\u2019 or \u2018disruptive\u2019. It\u2019ll revoke a website\u2019s permission to send notifications, and even block attempts to request permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you\u2019ve accidentally allowed a malicious site to send notifications. Chrome will be able to step in and block the alerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it\u2019s not yet clear how Google will define websites as \u2018abusive\u2019 or \u2018disruptive\u2019, it feels like a good move towards reducing the amount of spam we\u2019re exposed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google has explained that this new feature works to strengthen its \u2018Developer Terms of Service\u2019 that pledge not to use the company\u2019s API to send any form of spam. It shouldn\u2019t affect the majority of websites, but instead should go some way to keeping your Chrome notifications spam-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Development on Chrome\u2019s notification spam block protection has only just started, so we don\u2019t yet have a release date for the new feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
