Cabling Categories

Cat5

For a long time now, Cat5 cables have served as the standard for internet connections. It’s likely that the cable connecting your computer to your internet is Category 5 if you’re connected to a local area network. This kind of network cable utilises a bandwidth of upwards of 100 MHz and may carry data at 10 or 100Mbps across four coils of copper cable terminating in an RJ45 connector. When using a shorter Cat5 connection, you may even be able to get fast broadband speeds, although this is not always the case.

Cat6

CAT6 is the average cable standard for newer office buildings as well as the sixth generation of network cabling used in businesses and homes. CAT6 is compatible with the CAT5 systems that preceded it. These cables allow ethernet data speeds of up to 1 GB per second. 10 GB Ethernet connections may also be made using CAT6 cables, but only up to a distance of 55 metres.

Cat7

Based on its name, people usually assume the Cat7 cable is the newest and quickest version of network cabling. However, Cat7 is not a genuine IEEE cabling standard. It is a unique design without an official endorsement from the technology space. Cat7 does not employ RJ45 plugs. Instead, it uses its own unique connection. Any Cat7 cabling you choose will differ based on its manufacturer since neither the IEEE nor the EIA has standardised this network cabling.
